Is your TV like this: 30 seconds of ads on boot, a membership popup every time you switch channels, half the home screen pushing shows at you, and you have to dodge three rows of "limited-time deals" just to watch a movie off a USB drive.
They call it a TV, but it's really an ad machine.
Well, there's a fix now. Two open-source projects on GitHub have blown up at the same time, together racking up over 30,000 stars. No root, no flashing — 10 minutes is all it takes to turn a Chinese TV into a clean "Apple TV." Even TechCrunch wrote it up, and 187 media outlets worldwide followed.
Let's start with the bigger one: CleanYourTV, currently at 25k stars.
On October 17, the author posted a tweet — using AI to give his parents' TV a "bath." He posted the before-and-after, 7.4 million people watched, and within 4 days over 200 programmers voluntarily submitted code, expanding supported models from a few dozen to 243, covering 69 brands. Xiaomi, TCL, Sony, Skyworth — all on the list.
The principle isn't mysterious once you get it: TV systems all keep a debug interface (ADB) that was originally meant for developers. This project connects to the TV and "freezes" and blocks all the ad services the manufacturer stuffed in, the preinstalled junk apps, and the data reporting on what you're watching — then installs a clean launcher with a pure black background.
The key is it leaves you a way back: no root, nothing uninstalled, one command fully restores everything, and it has built-in backups, so even a slip of the hand won't brick your TV.
Now the second one: Aerial, written by a Chinese developer, 3,500 stars, and its positioning in one sentence — a clean launcher for Chinese TVs.
It's modeled on Apple TV's design: no recommendation feed on the home screen, just the apps you installed yourself, with glass-textured icon layouts. The screensaver uses the same 114 4K aerial films as Apple TV, supports Dolby Vision, and the wallpaper syncs with Bing's daily picks. The look is maxed out.
The killer feature is "automatic takeover on boot." Chinese TVs have an inherited trick: while in standby they secretly clean out third-party launchers and kick you back to the ad-filled home screen. Aerial specifically fights back — using accessibility services to automatically switch back, so the manufacturer can't kick you out even if it tries. Boot up and you land straight on your own launcher.
How to do it? Three steps:
Step one, turn on "ADB debugging" in your TV settings (every brand calls it something different; the project docs have a hand-holding tutorial); step two, install CleanYourTV's companion app on your phone, connect to the TV on the same Wi-Fi, and it's cleaned up in 5 minutes; step three, install Aerial and set it as the default launcher — done.
For the lazy ones there's an even easier route: take the prompts written into the project and send them straight to an AI assistant on your computer (Doubao, Claude Code, whatever works), and the AI will connect to the TV itself, analyze which junk packages your model has stuffed in, and walk you through the whole thing. That's part of why this blew up — "AI remodeling real home appliances" means everyone now has a free on-site technician in their pocket.
Three reminders:
One, not every model is perfect — LG, Samsung, and Huawei Smart Screens aren't supported, and some Hisense sets install but can't auto-start on boot, so check the compatibility list in the project before you start; two, cleaning carries risk, so be sure to use the official repo and don't download knockoff apps; three, the whole process is reversible — one click restores everything if it goes wrong.
Manufacturers make billions a year off boot ads; users are taking back their TVs through open source. In this fight, 30,000 GitHub stars have already cast their votes.
