This Isn't Just "Version Number +0.1"
Let's get the facts straight: Claude Sonnet 5 dropped on June 30th, and by convention it should've been a minor bump like Sonnet 4.6. But the gap from its predecessor is way bigger than the version number suggests.
The most obvious metric: context window. The previous Sonnet 4.6 had a 200K context — roughly 150,000 Chinese characters, about enough to fit The Three-Body Problem in one go. Sonnet 5, on the other hand, hits native 1M tokens in Claude Code — a full 5x jump.

Opus 4.8 was priced at $5 / million input tokens, $25 / million output tokens. Sonnet 5's official pricing is $3 input, $15 output. And before August 31st, there's a promotional price of $2 / $10 — 60% cheaper than Opus 4.8.
In plain English: Work you previously had to buy Opus for, Sonnet 5 can now handle for less than half the cost.
Anthropic's docs include a straightforward comparison chart — on the two tests that best measure agent capability, "BrowseComp" (agentic search) and "OSWorld" (computer operation):

But over the past year, the strongest "agentic capability" (the ability to browse the web, use tools, and get things done autonomously) has lived in the Opus series. The Sonnet series has always been "capable but just short of the mark."
Sonnet 5 doesn't just close that gap — it turns that missing piece into a whole leg. Its release puts Opus 4.8 in an extremely awkward position — is paying 2-3x more for a smarter Opus worth it? For 80% of use cases, probably not.
And the ripple effect of Anthropic's move is the real headache for OpenAI and Google. GPT-5's flagship pricing, Google Gemini Omni Flash's value proposition — both companies' mid-tier models have been propped up over the past year by "Sonnet 4.6 not being strong enough." Now that Sonnet 5 has raised the ceiling to this level, those two either have to cut prices or differentiate at the high end with Opus / GPT-5 high.
The most direct advice for individual users:
- If you're on Claude Pro / Free, you're on Sonnet 5 the moment you log in today — nothing to do;
