WorkBuddy's Hunyuan Hy3 has been postponed again to August 31st, with call volume surging 68x compared to Hy2. WorkBuddy is something that's been getting more and more buzz in the domestic developer community over the past month. Friends of mine who work as product managers and those running Xiaohongshu e-commerce operations have all been recommending it. Just days after the first extension deadline, Tencent pushed it back another 27 days, delaying it to August 31st.

WorkBuddy's Hunyuan Hy3 Delayed Again to August 31 — Call Volume Up 68x vs Hy2

WorkBuddy is getting more and more buzz in the domestic developer circle over the past month. Product managers and Xiaohongshu e-commerce operators I know are all recommending it. Just days after the first extension expired, Tencent pushed it out another 27 days to August 31. This is already the second delay.

You can't gauge the weight of this announcement without a comparison.

What Is WorkBuddy and How Hot Is It Right Now

WorkBuddy is a desktop office AI that Tencent launched in June. It's the same category as overseas agents like codex and Claude Code, but with a completely different positioning. Its biggest advantage is localization done right — no need for VPN, your account is just your WeChat or WeCom, the model list includes Hy3 / DeepSeek / Tongyi Qianwen, it reads domestic docx and WPS spreadsheets directly without conversion, and it even recognizes niche domestic needs like "Xiaohongshu-style copy generation" from your clipboard.

How hot is it? Just one month after integrating Hy3, the platform's public usage data looks like this:

Metric Before Hy3 After Hy3
Office task success rate 72% 90%
Avg. time per task Baseline -34%
% of users setting it as default - Over 60%
Call volume comparison - 68x vs Hy2

The most critical number — over 60% of active users have already set Hy3 as their default model. In other words, among people who used WorkBuddy this month, most have proactively switched their "standard config" to the domestic Hy3. Not just trying it out — it's daily reliance.

The 68x call volume figure looks alarming, but the logic checks out. MoE architecture bills based on activated parameters — Hy3 only runs 21B parameters per inference, so platform-side costs aren't extreme, and the free tier was sustainable from the start. Add the 256K context window that can stuff entire quotes and long contracts in one go, and it hits the white-collar office use case right on the nose. With codex, every step requires a proxy in China, and Claude Code hits the same wall. WorkBuddy took off because it genuinely pulled off "porting overseas agent capabilities to local office work."

Why Tencent Is Willing to Delay Twice

On the surface, it's dense user feedback. Before the first extension expired, the platform received a flood of "let us keep using it" requests, and Tencent rode that wave to push the date out another 27 days.

Deeper down, WorkBuddy as an office AI product is betting its chips on Hy3. WorkBuddy only launched in June, and Hy3 isn't the only model in the pool. Users voted with their default settings, and Tencent kept Hy3 on the free tier — effectively tying the product's reputation to the model's. Pulling it now would mean WorkBuddy yanking out the scaffolding it just set up. Tencent can do that math.

Two Things to Note

First, multimodal tasks aren't free. Hy3 is a pure text model — if you ask it to generate images or videos, the system automatically switches to another multimodal model and deducts points at normal rates. That said, the official app has plenty of free point-granting activities — daily login rewards, task rewards — so this is a deal worth milking.

Second, the window with abundant resources is 23:00 to 8:00 at night; during daytime peak hours, model speed may drop. Tencent singled out this time slot to tell you: move the heavy lifting to nighttime and speed doubles.

If You Haven't Gotten on the AI Train Yet, Grab This Free Window

I've said it repeatedly in my posts — this AI wave is like the PC internet and mobile internet before it: every generational shift leaves a group of people behind, and they never catch up. In the last agent iteration, codex and Claude Code made overseas developers the early movers, while most domestic peers knew about it but didn't act — either they couldn't use it or couldn't install it. This time, WorkBuddy tore down both barriers: no VPN hassle, no English foundation needed, you already have the account, you just pick the model, and it's unlimited and free.

August 31 is a clear dividing line. What happens after — how Hy3 gets priced, whether there'll be a third extension — Tencent didn't say in this announcement. Waiting until September to discuss is too late: a month from now, WorkBuddy's model lineup, usage rules, and pricing tiers may not even be today's version.

For friends still half-heartedly using Baidu or Taobao for AI work — this wave, WorkBuddy has opened the door to domestic agents right in front of you. The 27-day free window really won't wait.
