NVIDIA New Driver Tested: Benchmark Scores Up 8.1%, But No Difference in Games?
NVIDIA New Driver Tested: Benchmark Up 8.1%, but Games Feel No Different?
NVIDIA released driver 616.56 on August 26. International users tested it with the RTX 5080: benchmarks jumped sharply, but games barely moved.
All the gains are in compute and rendering:
DXR path tracing +8.1%, OpenCL +21.7% (the biggest jump), CUDA +5.5%, Blender +6.1%, Cinebench +6

NVIDIA's New Driver Tested: Benchmark Scores Up 8.1%, But Games Feel No Different?
NVIDIA released driver 616.56 on August 26. International users tested it with the RTX 5080: benchmark scores jumped significantly, but games barely moved.
What went up is all compute and rendering: DXR path tracing +8.1%, OpenCL +21.7% (the biggest jump), CUDA +5.5%, Blender +6.1%, Cinebench +6.7%. Games only gained around 2%, and ray-traced games were unchanged.
Why: Benchmark tasks are simple — once the driver streamlines compute throughput, gains show up immediately. Games are a full pipeline, bottlenecked by CPU, VRAM, and frame generation, so those optimizations get swallowed up.
Who should update: - Worth updating: running local LLMs, AI image generation (SD/ComfyUI), 3D rendering, DaVinci color grading — all of these rely on CUDA/OpenCL - Don't bother: pure gamers — no gains, wait for stable feedback
Note: This is third-party single-GPU testing, not official data, and NVIDIA's release notes don't mention these optimizations. Whether the RTX 40 series gets the same improvements is unknown.
The 21.7% OpenCL gain is the most significant — OpenCL on NVIDIA cards has historically been slower than CUDA, and this time it even overtook Vulkan. If retesting confirms this, it's genuinely good news for people using NVIDIA cards for work.
