The Two Kinds of Watermarking

The 2026 watermarking debate splits into two technologies that people constantly confuse:

Visible/robust watermarks - the logo stamped on the corner. Easy to see, easy to crop. Not a provenance tool.

Invisible provenance signals - metadata embedded in the file that survives editing: SynthID's pattern embedded into pixels, or C2PA's cryptographic manifest attached to the file. These are what regulators mean when they say watermarking.

SynthID: Watermark in the Pixels

SynthID, developed by Google DeepMind, embeds a pattern into the image pixels that is imperceptible to humans but detectable by software - and it survives compression, cropping and recoloring better than naive approaches. It was rolled out across Google's image generation products from 2023 onward. The tradeoff: detection needs the matching detector, so it is an ecosystem play rather than a universal standard.

C2PA: The Provenance Ledger

C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) takes a different route: a cryptographic manifest attached to the file records who created it, with what tool, and what was edited. Think of it as a signature chain for content. Camera makers, Adobe and OpenAI's image tools all support it. It survives as long as the manifest is preserved - strip the metadata and the chain breaks, which is why C2PA is often paired with visible badges.

The EU AI Act Makes It Mandatory

This is where watermarking stops being optional. The EU AI Act, in force since August 2024 with obligations phasing in through 2026, requires providers of AI systems that generate content to mark output in a machine-readable format as AI-generated. Deepfake content gets an explicit disclosure requirement. For anyone shipping a text-to-image or video model into the EU market, the watermark is now a compliance item, not a feature.

What It Means for Content Creators

  1. If you publish AI images, add the C2PA manifest where your tool supports it - it survives social platforms that strip basic EXIF.
  2. Expect platform-side AI-content labels to rely on these signals; labeled content can hit different distribution.
  3. For businesses: check whether your AI generation vendor provides compliant watermarking before the obligations phase in fully.

The direction is unambiguous: provenance metadata is becoming infrastructure, the same way HTTPS became infrastructure in the 2010s.
