AMD and Anthropic have signed a major chip procurement and investment deal. Anthropic will purchase up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's latest Instinct MI450 chips starting next year, while AMD will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic.

According to reports, AMD has signed a landmark chip procurement and investment agreement with Anthropic. Under the terms, Anthropic will begin purchasing up to 2 gigawatts of total compute power using AMD's latest-generation Instinct MI450 chips starting in the first half of next year. Additionally, AMD will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic. This deal is a major win for AMD in the AI chip market, positioning it as a serious alternative to NVIDIA's dominant GPU ecosystem. Anthropic, which recently surpassed OpenAI in valuation ($96.5B vs $85.2B), has been looking to diversify its hardware supply chain beyond NVIDIA. The partnership comes at a time when AI companies are racing to secure compute capacity. Anthropic's massive compute needs โ€” training models like Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 โ€” require enormous GPU clusters. The AMD Instinct MI450 is AMD's next-generation AI accelerator, competing directly with NVIDIA's upcoming H300 'Vera Rubin' platform.
